TAXI'S TOP 12

  • 1.

    LOCALLY OWNED & OPERATED

All of our taxi-cab owners and drivers are members of this community. They live here, they shop here, and they play here. Their families are neighbours just like you with children and grandchildren that go to the same local schools and play for the same sports teams. They pay taxes just like you and the money they earn stays in the community. 20% of what they earn does not go directly outside of this country to a business that has absolutely no vested interest in our community.

    DEDICATED, EXPERIENCED DRIVERS

Transporting people from one location to another is not a way to make some fast cash on the weekend or whenever you feel like it. We're dedicated, experienced drivers who depend on driving taxi for a living. We take our driving very seriously and work extremely hard to provide the best possible service. Every taxi driver is listed with the Region. It's all transparent and above board. Ride app drivers only exist in the system of the business they sign on with. It's ripe for an underground economy that doesn't necessarily report their earnings and pay their fair share of taxes.

SENIORS, CHILDREN, AND SPECIAL NEEDS DEPEND ON US

We work closely with local organizations and institutions to provide specialized transportation for seniors, children with special needs, and adults with disabilities. Between the members of the Waterloo Region Taxi Alliance, we have 20 vehicles that have been customized for wheel chair access at a cost of around $40 thousand dollars per vehicle and totally subsidized by the tax-cab companies.

The drivers of these customized vehicles are specially trained in everything from CPR to wheelchair and scooter handling. They are thoroughly scrutinized and checked by a variety of sources including vulnerable checks through the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) security database. Our drivers don't just drive these special passengers from point A to point B. Our drivers are responsible for the safety and care of these vulnerable passengers from the time we pick them up to the time we deliver them to their teachers, caregivers, and medical specialists.

TAXIS ARE SAFER THAN RIDES WITH STRANGERS

Every taxi-cab in the Region is easily identified and obviously a professional taxi with complete exterior decoration including an individual cab number. Inside, complete and official driver identification, photo ID, and information are clearly visible. You're NOT taking what amounts to a digital hitchhike with someone supposedly called "Joe" on your smart phone app.

With a taxi, you KNOW that your driver is carefully and closely scrutinized by the local police, the taxi cab companies and alliance, and regional government. Safety initiatives of the Waterloo Region Taxi Alliance (not the Region) will see cameras inside all taxis in addition to mandatory participation and passing by all taxi-cab drivers in a special "Providing Safe Space" program conducted by the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo - a first in Canada.

PROOF OF $8 MILLION DOLLARS OF INSURANCE PER CAR

We just don't talk the talk. While the Region only requires $2.5 million dollars of insurance, we have indisputable proof that each of our taxis is thoroughly covered by $8 million dollars of insurance. This is to protect and assist our customers as much as it is our drivers. When you get into a taxi cab here in the Region, you KNOW you are covered should an accident occur. The Region demands it or that cab isn't allowed to operate.

The same can't be said for ride apps where you only have the unsubstantiated assurance of some faraway company and absolutely no proof that the car you're in and the person who's driving are properly insured. No insurance or improper coverage will mean that YOU will be out in the cold when it comes to costly medical bills and ongoing rehabilitation.

OUR TAXI-CABS MUST PASS CONTINUAL INSPECTIONS

All of our taxis MUST have annual road safety inspections. In fact, if a taxi-cab is older than 10 years, it must pass inspection every 6 months. This is regulated by your Regional Government. Absolutely no taxi-cab is allowed on the road unless it is mechanically and operationally sound. Best of all, you KNOW it has been checked because the Region closely monitors it. All of this is on top of the ongoing care that taxi-cab owners put into their cars inside and out. After all, their business and their livelihood depend on the reliability and safety of their taxi-cabs.

  • 7.

LICENCED TO DRIVE PASSENGERS BY THE REGION

Every taxi-cab driver in the Region MUST pass our taxi-cab company test, be approved by the insurance company, and clear a vulnerable background check by the Waterloo Regional Police before being licensed to drive taxi-cab by the Region. When you take one of our taxis, you KNOW that the proper licensing, security checks and insurance is in place thanks to your Regional government.

You have NO way of knowing if ride app drivers and vehicles are properly licensed or insured. Only the ride app company that they signed on with knows for sure. You're expected to take their word for it and trust them. It's backed up by rhetoric and empty assurances with little to no actual, verifiable proof.

  • 8.

THE NUMBER OF TAXIS IN OPERATION IS REGULATED

We don't decide how many taxi cabs are required to service the needs of our community - Regional Government does. Currently, one cab is authorized for every group of 1,650 people. This does not include the 20 wheel chair access vehicles that are mandated by Regional Government and subsidized by the taxi companies.

In the ride app world, the more cars, the better. Their claims of better and faster service supersedes our Regional quest to reduce the number of cars on the road, encourage the use of public transit including Light Rail Transit, regulate private transit like legitimate taxi-cab companies, and reduce our community's carbon footprint.

  • 9.

    REGULATED, "NO SURPRISE" PRICES

All taxi-cab fares in the Region of Waterloo are regulated by Regional government. They set the fees. We don't. They ensure that the cost of a taxi-cab doesn't increase during peak times, holidays, emergencies, snow storms, or events. Unlike the ride app companies, the cost of taking a taxi does NOT increase during peak occurrences and on the whim of the company controlling the system.

    YES, WE TAKE CREDIT CARDS

There are those who seem to think we take cash only and that's simply not true. We have taken credit cards for many years now and are in the process of adding debit to how we do business. Our methods of payment are no different than any other business in the community and expand into new ways as they become available and proven.

  • 11.

TAXIS HAVE HAD GPS FOR YEARS

GPS is nothing new for the taxis in Waterloo Region. Our taxi-cabs have been fully equipped for several years now. In fact, all of the taxi-cab companies in the Region are completely computerized. We know exactly where every taxi is located at all times. For our drivers, GPS acts as a quick reference backup for a new or the rare, unknown address.

Our drivers also have the added option of calling in for confirmation. Better yet, our experienced drivers know the best routes and ways of getting around the Region without having the distraction of constantly glancing at the GPS screen instead of the road where their attention should be.

    TAXIS HAVE RIDE APPS TOO

All of our taxi-cab owners and drivers are members of this community. They live here, they shop here, and they play here. Their families are neighbours just like you with children and grandchildren that go to the same local schools and play for the same sports teams. They pay taxes just like you and the money they earn stays in the community. 20% of what they earn does not go directly outside of this country to a business that has absolutely no vested interest in our community.
